Letters From The Man In The Moon Attenuation Book 1 eBook Keith Basham Cris Qualiana Reviews
In the interest of the trendy Full Disclosure everyone obsesses over these days, I should probably mention that I've known Basham for what must be a decade or more, albeit exclusively online. That said it wasn't until I happened to catch him post a general link to this novel that I gathered he was a writer [or, if he'd ever mentioned writing, I may have dismissed it—because who *isn't* a writer, on the 'net, the term rapidly being repurposed to mean He Who Emits Brony FanFic]; so I grabbed a copy and promptly didn't read it for a couple months.
As you might guess from the five stars, above, I eventually got round to reading it. Or you might guess that I'm doing what Dexter Cornell did to Out of Whack in the remake of DOA A for Ambitious. But then, in fairness, and with a bit of a spoiler alert, that book was apparently good enough to kill for.
I did in fact read it. Finally. And then quickly. Because, at it turns out, it's really very clever. A curiously advanced HardScienceFiction tale hidden within a simple narrative, the mathematics of flying from star to star distilled to a slightly postmodern vernacular. The guy telling you what's wrong with your car, in space those who get calculus and quantum and astrophysics will see that Basham gets it too; those who don't will encounter less technical jargon overall than heard in Star Wars.
The book is funny, too. Primarily, the text is written by Larry, reincarnated through cloning across hundreds of millennia, as he reports on the progress of the terraforming occurring on the planet beneath his manmade moon his lovecraftian descriptions of the evolving lifeforms from era to era, and his eyerolling disdain for his seeded humanoids constantly wandering out into the developing world to be eaten by bears.
And, since trigger warnings are also in style spiders.
It's a quick book—four hours to read, according to my —but only because the entire story is conveyed through what amount to EMails. Scores of millennia are accounted for in a single sentence as Larry excuses his absence between his recurring deaths and reconstitutions across half a million years. And complains about bears. And wonders about spiders.
Grab it; read it; laugh and contemplate. It's worth it.
Old school in the vein of Heinlein or Clark. A fine premise, well executed.
I really enjoyed this book, it's not too often a sci fi stay mostly true to science and still surprise with some big ideas. This book succeeds in that regard and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
Enjoyed a nice piece of old school science fiction, If your looking for star wars/trek this isn't for you, but it might lead you to L. Ron Hubbard books.
I really enjoyed the read, and will be looking forward to more books from Keith in the future!
A unique, clever take on space colonization. Technical enough to appeal to sci-fi aficionados, at the same time it's a fun, first person narrative that doesn't get too bogged down in it. Larry, the story's voice, is very relatable. His exasperation with the human race resonates clearly with that part of us all. Overall, well worth a look.
Great little read, reminded me of stories from the old Analog magazines of my youth. Once I started I didn't want it to end.
One star for the author's first book. One star for the lovable gruff hero. One star for the universal story. One star for the compelling plot. One star for the rare sci-fi book that is filled with science yet is utterly readable.
If you are in the mood for a multi-generational epistolary novella of terraforming, interstellar colonization, and catastrophic extinction, this is the book for you. It's also very funny.
